چکیده

So the story goes, in the late 1980s, the Turkish general Kenan Evren, who led the 1980 coup d’etat in Turkey, encountered the popular Turkish music icon known widely as ‘the Pasha of Art’, Zeki Müren, who was a much respected performer – well-known for his extravagant costumes on stage and his mannered queer performance. This encounter was followed by a conversation initiated by the general’s curiosity about the honorary title bestowed on Müren by the Turkish public, namely pasha, a title reserved under the Ottoman sultanate for high-ranking military personnel.2 Evren asked Müren why this symbolic title had been given to him. After some hesitation, and at the general’s insistence, Müren answered the question: ‘This nation was so angry about what you did during the military coup, but they couldn’t be very open with their anger. Rather than calling you and your colleagues faggots (ibne), they called me pasha’.

The difficulty of attempting to “particularise” self-consciousness is challenged and dismantled by proposing ways in which putatively exclusive esoteric knowledges of being can be exposed and expanded. This is achieved by justifying singular (queer) experience as it c...

The queerest of the queer: sexuality, politics and music on the Brisbane scene

Brisbane’s queer scene is relatively obscure, outside of those who actively participate in it, little is known of it and practically nothing is written about it. Broadly speaking, queer culture works in direct contrast to the coherent and commodified culture of the gay mainstream and collectively rejects conventional ‘gay music’ favouring instead a multiplicity of musical styles and performance...

Intersections: But what can ever happen to Queer Theory?: An Introduction to 'Queer Theory and Visual Cultures in Southeast Asia'

1. The title of this special edition of Intersections: Gender and Sexuality in Asia and the Pacific is deceptively succinct. 'Queer Theory and Visual Cultures in Southeast Asia' immediately suggests the filtering of 'regional' or 'local' imagery through whatever can be assumed of Queer Theory as a definable academic enterprise. But queer theory and Southeast Asia semantically share, as discursi...
